Northerns player gets Valke call-up

He is part of the Valke U16A side that will represent the province in the upcoming IPT in Durban.

Loose forward Levi Bennett’s selection into the Valke U16 team is a stepping stone to what he hopes would be a great rugby career.

The Benoni Northerns junior player will get his provincial colours when he plays for the Valke Rugby Union’s U16A team in an interprovincial tournament in Durban from September 21.

“I am very excited and proud. It is the next stepping stone to pursuing my goals in my rugby career,” he said.

Though anxious while waiting to find out if he made the cut, having competed for a spot in the team against 149 other hopefuls, the 187cm tall and 120kg player always knew trusting the process would eventually pay off.

Levi Bennett carries the ball in a match for Northerns.

“It wasn’t a question of ‘if’ but rather ‘when’,” Bennett said about his selection.

“I set my mind to it and knew if I put in the work and effort, I would make it.”

The youngster first stepped on the field as a six-year-old. He played for two seasons and then stopped. He returned to playing last year after realising ‘rugby is the sport for me’.

He admitted getting back was difficult, adding that his success was because of hard work, commitment, and support from his parents.

“This is the first prestigious award in my career. Although it is a personal achievement, I am a team player. This sport taught me about fitness, ball skills, endurance and the importance of staying healthy.”

Bennett is confident of a career in the pro ranks in the near future, saying ‘without a doubt’ his boots will step onto the field to play for South Africa internationally.

“The Springboks are my inspiration and true legends. I can relate to the effort, skills and dedication they give to the game,” Bennett said.

His mother, Jenna-Lee, attributed the player’s rapid rise to dedication and respect.

“I am proud of him. He has not missed a single practice session or match and each time he steps on the field he gives it his all. Watch this space, this boy is going places,” she said.
