Sosibo ready for SPAR Jozi challenge

She's second on 58 points on the leader-board.

Boxer athlete Cacisile Sosibo is looking forward to the 33rd SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi 10km race at Marks Park in Emmarentia on October 6.

Fresh from her second-place finish in the senior women’s 10 km race at the SA cross-country championships on September 7, where she missed her road PB in the distance by four seconds when she clocked 33:10 for the silver, Sosibo lauded Spar for giving local women an opportunity to showcase their talent.

“The race gives us a chance as SA women to challenge for faster times. And it’s all thanks to Spar,” she said.

She looked to compatriot and current SPAR Women’s Challenge series leader, Glenrose Xaba, who has notched two victories after winning the opening leg in Cape Town and the Tshwane event on August 3, as an inspiration for local women to record fast times and challenge the dominance of Ethiopia’s Tadu Nare.

Xaba broke Elana Meyer’s 23-year-old women’s 10km by one second when she clocked 31:12 at the ABSA 10km Run Your City, before beating Nare in Tshwane in leg three of the series.

“Glenrose set us an example and showed us how to do it. We’ll do the same,” said Sosibo.

She finished eighth in Durban after placing fourth in Cape Town before placing third in Tshwane in 35:21. She is second on the leader-board on 58 points, 31 points behind leader Xaba.

Cian Oldknow won the senior women’s 10km. She’s flanked by runner-up Cacisile Sosibo (left) and third-placed Karabo Mailula.

The fact that no South African woman has won this series since 2018 has given Sosibo enough motivation to push herself but it will depend on how she’s feeling.

“This season, it will depend on whether my body is tired or not. If I’m still okay, we’ll push for it.”
