Alleged rape attempt ends in devastating fire
The family said they are still shocked and devastated by the incident.
Putfontein police are looking for a 27-year-old man who allegedly attempted to rape his 17-year-old cousin before setting his uncle’s home on fire in an act of rage in Mayfield on September 12.
To protect the identity of the victim, the girl’s father would not be named.
According to the father, his nephew tried to sexually assault his daughter while she was alone in the house.
“On the day of the incident, he came to fetch his mat. My wife and I were on our way to a parents’ meeting at school at around 13:00. We did not think it was anything out of the ordinary because he always came to our house and my children were free around him.
“We were shocked when my wife received a call from my daughter screaming that her cousin wants to rape her.
“He threatened her that when he was done he would kill her and himself. We immediately left the meeting and rushed home.”
The father said the teenager managed to somehow fight back and escape.
In a rage, the man reportedly locked the house and set fire to it with the intention of killing himself. However, he then fled the scene.
Neighbours noticed smoke billowing from the home and immediately helped put out the fire. Despite their efforts, the flames had already consumed most of the property, worth about R300 000.
The father said they are still shocked and devastated by the incident.
“It is hard to believe someone in our own family could do this. There was nothing I did not do for him. I treated him like my own son.”
Putfontein SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Raider Ubisi, said the police are investigating a case of attempted rape and arson. Investigations are still continuing.
The family is appealing for assistance with school uniforms for their four children who go to Benoni schools.
