Recycled bottle tops provide wheelchairs to those in need.

The tumbling sounds of thousands of bottle caps often sound like applause for Lynne Crawcour, who for the past 11 years have been collecting them of every shape and colour.

The Primrose resident has become a regular sight at various Benoni Lakes Lions Club events to encourage members of the community to support the Tops & Tags for Wheelchairs initiative.

“We partnered with Lynne during the Covid-19 lockdown period as a means of continuing with our work,” said Beaulieu Mare of the Lions Club.

“The Lions’ five pillars of service include health and environment therefore joining hands with the organisation came with double the benefits.”

Crawcour explained that through a partnership with Interwaste, collected tops are responsibly recycled.

“In turn, we receive a wheelchair per 500kg of plastic tops,” she said.

“Collecting these specific items is easy to do and the far-reaching impact means that we are looking after our environment as well as giving the gift of mobility to another.”

To date the organisation has successfully collected 77 500kg of tops thus, amounting to 155 wheelchairs, one of which has benefitted a resident within the Benoni Lakes Lions Club’s service area.

“We encourage members of the community, schools and social clubs to support us through this initiative,” said Beaulieu.

“What may seem like an insignificant undertaking has a huge impact on the lives of someone living with a disability or lifelimiting disease.”

Donations may be delivered to Beaulieu’s Books, Homeware and Gifts at Morehill Market, 7 Landau Street.
