After his exploits at the provincial championships in March, SOWLE Centre’s Matthew van Heerden added four more gold medals to his growing collecting during the recent SA Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired (SASAII) championships in Gqeberha.
Van Heerden clinched gold in the long jump, 100m sprint, javelin and discus. This follows the four gold he won in the Gauteng championships at Pilditch Stadium in March.
He added a silver in the futsal after Gauteng placed second to make it five medals in the competition.
The seven learners representing the centre came back with 19 medals, adding to the combined 13 received at the provincials in March.
Jessica Riley won gold in the U17 girls’ long jump and discus with a personal milestone. She added two silvers in the shot put and an 800m walk.

“All staff, parents, management and fans of SOWLE Centre are ecstatic about their results and could not be more proud of their learners, which also serves as a source of inspiration for the younger learners in the school,” said the school’s administrator Jacqui Coetzer.
Coetzer thanked Coach Jean Delport for helping the learners achieve their results.
