Apricot Tree learners gain entrepreneurial experience
Learning vocational skills contributes to the learner’s independence and builds confidence.
The popcorn popped, and the carnival games were cause for great excitement during the Apricot Tree’s annual market week from November 5 to 9.
The young adult learners at the Northmead-based stimulation centre showcased their vocational skills, selling crafts and treats.
“It is important our learners gain practical experience, such as working with money, engaging socially with the public and gaining confidence in their abilities,” said principal Abby Reason.

“Throughout the week, each adult learner could make and sell their products while serving customers with the help of their parents and support staff.
“The market allows us to raise awareness about our facility while contributing to our ongoing fundraising efforts.”
Manning the hotdog stand, Aramis and David said that although they preferred boerewors rolls, the fresh rolls were hard to resist.

Eagerly selling raffles, Nathan happily chats with visitors, welcoming them to the buzzing centre.
“I have had a lot of fun and am happy to see so many people support us. We all worked hard to make this week a success,” he said.
Following the scent of freshly baked biscuits, Rorisang’s inviting smile is hard to ignore.

“My mom made these biscuits,” he said, his face lighting up with joy.
“They taste so good because she puts tons of love in them.”
Reason thanked everyone who supported the week, saying the learners benefitted greatly from the experience.
