FOLLOW-UP: Authorities to investigate fatal N12 accident

Four trucks and five motor vehicles were involved in the fatal accident.

The Benoni SAPS and the EMPD will launch an investigation into the fatal multi-vehicle accident on the N12 west near the Voortrekker Road bridge on November 19.

DEMS media liaison William Ntladi confirmed the road was opened to traffic travelling westbound later in the afternoon after removing the wreckage of a light motor vehicle and four trucks from the scene and rehabilitating the road surface.

“The occupants of a silver Suzuki were declared dead on the scene of the accident, which involved an additional five cars,” he said.

This truck, hauling a load of wood and another carrying sand, is suspected to have caused the multi-vehicle accident that left two dead.

According to information, CoE rescue teams from Benoni and Rynfield fire stations received a call at 10:03 about two accidents on that stretch of road, mere meters apart.

“It is alleged that the primary accident involved two trucks, one carrying wood and another loaded with sand. Due to the initial incident, the two right-hand lines were affected, with the load of wood obstructing traffic.

“One of the trucks involved in this first collision veered off the road and came to a stop in the dense overgrowth on the left-hand side, just after the Voortrekker Road footbridge,” Ntladi explained.

Curious onlookers gather along the embankment of First Street, Northmead, and the Voortrekker Road Bridge as emergency personnel scramble to free a silver Suzuki from between two trucks on the N12 on November 19.

“As a result of this accident, traffic came to a halt, leading to the second fatal accident. The Suzuki, with a male and female occupant, was trapped between two side tipper trucks, the first of which had already come to a stop.

“Specialised rescue tools were used to dislodge the wreckage for emergency response personnel to access the victims. The drivers of the other vehicles involved in the crash sustained minor injuries.”

Pieces of wood strewn across the two right-hand lanes, bringing traffic to a grinding halt.
