WATCH: Joyous celebration as Class of 1989 reunites

The East Rand Speedboat Club buzzed with stories of accomplishments and how fate brought everyone together.

Hugs, laughter, and heartfelt conversations filled the atmosphere at the East Rand Speedboat Club on November 16, where the Class of 1989 from William Hills High School gathered for their 35-year reunion.

The former learners, who are now professionals in various fields, expressed joy at recognising old classmates as they marvelled at how each individual has evolved over the years.

Before the joyous celebrations could begin, the Class of 1989 paused for a moment, bowing their heads in honour of former classmates who have died.

Former William Hills High School learners (class of 1989) were thrilled to see each after decades during their reunion held at the East Rand Speedboat Club on November 16.

Several tealight candles were lit at a memorial table as the former learners shared a collective sense of loss for their old friends.

Nazareen Asmal said: “Back then, we thought the year 2000 was the future, and now here we are, closer to it being the past,” she said jokingly.

“It’s amazing to see so many familiar faces; some of us have barely changed. Time may have added a few grey hairs and a couple of laugh lines, but what hasn’t changed is that we’re still us.

“We are that same group of kids who laughed together, got stressed over exams and counted down the days until we matriculated. It’s wonderful to see how far we’ve all come.”

One of the organisers of the reunion, Cynthia Naidoo, said this year marks their second reunion, the first having taken place in 2015.

Nazareen Asmal said it was amazing to see so many familiar faces; some of whom have barely changed.

“We were one of the very first classes to start reunions. Such reunions give us time to bond with friends because we grew up in the same community in Actonville.

“We were a class of 177 when we matriculated, and we have lost 26.”
