William Hills principal elated with pass rate improvement

The school 83.8%.

William Hills Secondary School principal Lionel Singh was on cloud nine after the school saw a major improvement in its matric pass rate.

After the class of 2022 slipped to 58.2% from 81% achieved by the class of 2021, the school saw an improvement of 25.6% as the class of 2023 obtained 83.8%.

Singh heaped praise on his teachers, saying the improvement was as a result of their dedication and commitment, adding that the community also played a crucial role in ensuring the learners were safe during study camps.

Loyiso Xuza was happy after receiving her matric certificate.

“2023 was by far the gauntlet year. It was very hard. We had to pull out all the stops and put into place systems we never had before.

“We applied for a School Improvement Plan (SIP). We had to ask the community to assist us with safety and security measures. Thanks to the CPF for coming to the party and also funding our SIP programme. We brought about a school camp and also had nutrition scheme for our learners,” said Singh.

The school achieved 25 bachelor’s passes, 25 diplomas and 17 higher certificates. Kesiloe Nkabane was the top achiever with three distinctions and Yeshua Samuel obtained two.

“We didn’t have weekends or holidays. They were all occupied by study camps, SIP and sci-bono programmes. Today, we are reaping the fruits and benefits of all that hard work. There is nothing born out of not doing anything. There’s no substitute for hard work.

“The learners saw what we were doing and understood the importance of the matric certificate. They came to the party. We were 58% in 2022 and now we’ve turned it around to almost 85%. It’s good enough for me and our community. We will keep building,” he said.
