Police recover two unlicensed firearms

A 34-year-old taxi driver was arrested in New Modder Road on December 11 after being found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele explained that Ekurhuleni District Task Team members approached the suspicious looking taxi, parked on the side of the road.

“The four occupants, including the driver were ordered out of the vehicle and searched, where upon the driver was found in possession of an unlicensed revolver.

“In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspect ran from the scene, but he was quickly arrested.”

At the police station, a further search of the taxi was conducted where a second firearm and ammunition was discovered at the back of the vehicle.

Acting Station Commander Colonel Reginah Rampota applauded the officers’ diligence in ensuring that yet another suspected criminal will face the might of the law.
