Haworth to take U3A members on a tour of the central African Copperbelt

He will share a brief history of the British ambitions in Southern Africa, specifically in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Geologist Peter Haworth will treat members of the U3A to the history, geography and geology of the central African Copperbelt of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during the organisation’s first meeting of the year on January 14, at Northfield Methodist Church.

Haworth spent time in the Copperbelt as an exploration geologist on three deposits – Kalumbila (Zambia), Musonoi (Kolwezi, DRC) and Lubembe (Congo Pedicle).

He will share a brief history of the British ambitions in Southern Africa, specifically in Zimbabwe and Zambia, as well as an account of the discovery of the Copperbelt, with a brief description of the mines and the geology.

Furthermore, Haworth will chronicle the delineation of the border between the two countries as related to the watershed between the Congo and Zambezi Basins, as well as the rail network servicing the Copperbelt.

Haworth was born in Zimbabwe. He had an early childhood in Zambia and was educated in South Africa. He graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a BSc Engineering degree in the branch of mining geology.

He has worked in South, East, West and Central Africa.

Registration starts at 09:30 and the meeting follows at 10:00.
