Four suspects arrested in connection with murder and robberies

It is alleged the suspects have been terrorising members of the Makalakaleni community.

Four suspects were arrested in connection with a string of armed robberies and murders in Makalakaleni Mandela Park.

On January 20, members of the Benoni and Germiston Flying Squad, detectives from Katlehong SAPS, EMPD, Crime Intelligence, Ekurhuleni K9 unit, Ekurhuleni Highway Patrol and the Gauteng Traffic Airwing assembled, following up on information to trace the suspects, who have allegedly been active since December.

According to Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) spokesperson Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, it is alleged that the men committed armed robberies which resulted in victims being shot and killed.

“The tactical operation kicked off with informants playing a crucial role in identifying shacks where the suspects could reside,” he said.

“The suspects were arrested and thorough searches of their dwellings led to the discovery of a 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol with the serial number filed off and four live rounds of ammunition.”

An unlicensed firearm and ammunition along with Mandrax and meth were recovered.

Further investigation also led to the discovery of 135 Mandrax tablets and 40 packets of meth.

Station commander of Katlehong North SAPS, Colonel Nomthandazo Gumbi expressed her gratitude and praise for every stakeholder that assisted in securing this positive outcome.

“Investigations are now underway to establish links between the suspects as well as the reported cases,” said Gumbi.

“No member of the community should live in fear. We believe these arrests will bring peace of mind to many.”

The suspects will appear in Palmridge Magistrate’s Court.
