Criminals target churches
Church sound equipment has become a commodity item for criminals.
Burglars recently targeted four churches in Northmead and Farrarmere.
This is according to a community member who wished to remain anonymous.
Benoni Police Station spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele confirmed that church burglaries are increasing but would not confirm the exact number of cases under investigation.
“Our detective branch has found that high-value sound equipment seems to be criminals’ primary target,” she said.
“Other items, such as laptops and cameras, have also been stolen.”
She said police are investigating the possibility that a syndicate is responsible.
“Although it seems unthinkable that criminals would target places of worship, the reality is criminals will strike wherever there is an opportunity for financial gain,” said Sekele.
“We are appealing to faith-based organisations to beef up security in and around their properties. Where possible, ensure that equipment is stored safely or extra measures are in place to safeguard it.”
Sekele said burglaries of this nature will continue as long as demand for such goods exists.
“We urge the community, businesses and other church leaders to guard against buying second-hand sound equipment,” she said.
“Support through these sales is fuelling criminal activities throughout our policing area.
