CPF TIP: ATM scams on the rise again
Vigilance is key in safeguarding your hard-earned money.

According to Benoni CPF spokesperson Stephan Lombard, ATM scams and fraud are once again on the rise.
“To ensure that ATM users are safe and their hard-earned money remains safely in their possession, we have issued a list of safety tips,” he said.
“ATM scammers are experts in what they do. It is, therefore, vital that customers are on high alert when using these remote banking facilities.”
• Do not accept help or assistance from bystanders, even if they claim to be bank officials or security personnel.
“If someone offers to assist claiming that the machine may have been giving errors, immediately cancel the transaction and ensure you remove your card,” said Lombard.
“Do not enter your Pin no matter how insistent the ‘good Samaritan’ is.”
• Where possible try using ATMs located at banking institutions during operating hours.
“Should you suspect something is amiss you can immediately report the incident or person to staff and immediately get assistance should you suspect you have been scammed or defrauded in any way,” said Lombard.
“When using ATMs that are not located at a bank, have someone you trust, accompany you at the machine.”
• ATM scams have allegedly increased within shopping malls and centres, be alert at all times.
• If you suspect that you may have fallen victim to an ATM scam, immediately report the matter to the relevant bank as well as the police using the 10111 call centre number.
• Alternatively call the Benoni Police Station’s crime office on 011 747 0111.
