Scouts make a splash at gala

Benoni troops claimed the top three podium positions.

Like fish in water, local Scouts recently showed their mettle during the annual East Rand District Combined Cub, Scout and Rover swimming gala.

Making a splash at the Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool on February 1, troops from across the East Rand competed in a fun-filled day of swimming and camaraderie.

Entering two full teams of Cubs, Scouts and Rovers, 1st Benoni Sea Scouts were crowned the ultimate winners with its Dolphins team claiming the title of overall winners, followed by its sister team, the 1st Benoni Orcas, taking a close second place.

The 9th Benoni team claimed third place, demonstrating the strength and depth of scouting in Benoni.

Other participating groups included 4th Benoni Air Scouts, 6th Benoni Scouts, 1st Kempton Park Scouts, 1st Boksburg Scouts, 2nd Boksburg Scouts as well as Springs Central Air Scouts.

The competition was fierce, but in the end, the 1st Benoni Dolphins proved to be the team to beat.

“This was a fantastic day of swimming and scouting spirit,” Mike Weeks, district commissioner for the East Rand District.

“We are proud to see our local Scouts excelling in the pool and demonstrating the values of teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship that scouting embodies.”

About 1st Benoni Sea Scouts
The 1st Benoni Sea Scouts was established in 1909 and has a rich 115-year history, fostering teamwork, leadership and service to the community.

The group boasts of ever-growing troops including:
• Meerkats (ages five to seven)

• Cubs (seven to 11 years)

• Scouts (aged 12 to 18 years)

The group focuses on maritime skills, wilderness adventure and character development.
