Melville Koppies: From burnt to beautiful in six months

The Koppies have been fighting back against devastating fires for millions of years.

Last winter, successive fires (planned and unplanned) raced through Melville Koppies, sizzling and scorching everything in their path.

Some fires lingered on, creeping through the parched undergrowth and finishing off what remained.

But the vegetation of the Koppies is used to devastating fires.

It’s been fighting back and regenerating for millions of years. Come and see for yourself.

The grasses are seeding, scorched trees are almost fully clothed again and everything is green and glowing.
Melville Koppies is open on Sundays from 08:00 to 11:30.

The cost is R100 for adults, R50 for under 18s and kiddies under five get in free. A annual season ticket is R500.

Special tours can be booked for weekdays or Saturdays.

Security is provided and there is safe parking opposite the entrance to Melville Koppies, at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia.

All income generated is used for the conservation of the Koppies.
