Residents donate blood and support crafters

“Community building begins when we support one another.”

Crafters, bakers and service organisations gathered outside Handy Hardware, in Northmead, in support of the business’ blood drive on March 15.

The smell of sizzling boerewors beckoned motorists and members of the community to the event, aimed at supporting the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) and providing crafty entrepreneurs with a platform to showcase their handiwork.

While some rolled up their sleeves to save a life, others used the opportunity to have their blood glucose levels tested by the Lions Club of Benoni, and to discuss service delivery concerns with Ward 27 and 28 councillors Lornette Joseph and Mary Goby.

“It is nice to see so many people popping in to support local business and service organisations,” said Sumari Bornman, member of the Avenues Residents Association (ARA).

“We have so many talented individuals living among us and hopefully with a bit of exposure they can garner more support from their neighbours.”

Tending to her table of crocheted toys, Annamarie Jonker said every creation is a labour of love.

‘Scent’ from heaven. Veronique Greyling’s home-made soap will transport you to a place of serenity.

“I cannot tell you which one of these toys are my favourite. I spend so much time making them that they all become very dear to me,” she said.

Smiling as shoppers took turns smelling the alluring aroma of her home-made soap range, Veronique Greyling said that a great deal of thought goes into every batch of bubbly bars.

“I want my soaps to tell a story, it must not only create a luxurious lather, the gentle scent must wash away stress.”

If you missed this blood drive, don’t stress, the SANBS Northmead Donor Centre will be open on Human Rights Day (March 21) from 08:00 to 14:00.
