WATCH: Bark-bark-hooray to a successful spayathon

The event raised more than R60 000 in donations.

Tails wagged and happy barks sounded the start of the The Animal Guardians’ (TAG) annual Spayathon, hosted by the Benoni Northerns Sport Club, on March 21.

Four-legged participants tugged on their leashes prompting their human companions to pick up the pace as they made their way along the 5km route, through the quiet streets of Northmead.

Ready for action are Cassie Matthews and Marthin van Staden of Edenvale, with Bella and Oscar.

With BNAC members stationed at every corner, participants clocked running times, reached their daily step goals and kick-started the long weekend while contributing the animal welfare organisation’s outreach project, which assists responsible pet owners from underprivileged communities to spay and neuter their pets, thus playing an active role in preventing unwanted litters being abandoned.

Filled with zeal, BNAC club president Bernice Piveteau said community support for the event surpassed expectation.

“More than R60 000 was raised during the event,” she said.

“This includes ticket sales, monetary donations, raffle ticket sales as well as donations in the form of food.

“We are beyond grateful for everyone’s support. It is again a testament of Benoni’s giving spirit.”
Annie Jungmann, of TAG further extended her thanks to the event organisers, event sponsors George Rennie and Super Vets for a ‘pawsome’ fundraising initiative.

“It was phenomenal to see so many people supporting us,” said Jungmann.

“An added bonus was seeing so many of our fur-babies taking to the streets with their adoptive families.”
