#EasterSportsFest: St Dunstan’s win derby to start festival positively

They opened their tournament with a 3-0 victory against Benoni High.

The St Dunstan’s College boys’ first team began the defence of their turf with a 3-0 punishment of cross-suburb rivals, Benoni High, to start the #StDunstans Easter Sports Festival positively on April 16.

It was not an edge-of-your-seat derby but it was one worth watching as the hosts dialed up their 2-0 win from last year’s festival with another resounding victory over their neighbours.

From the get-go, St Dunstan’s dominated with an array of well-crafted attacking moves including some slick plays that won them a few short corners at the start. The match was virtually won in the first half as the home-side raced to a 3-0 before half-time.

They drew first blood through the stick of Tristan Nidd in the 10th minute before Owen McGill doubled their advantage in the 14th minute after sustained periods of pressure.

They continued to pepper the BHS keeper and his backline looking to increase their advantage. Kyle Vice eventually found the back of the net to add his team’s third two minutes before the break.

In the second stanza, St Dunstans were reduced to 10 men and BHS wasted no time and advanced forward trying to find a hole to equalise but time evaporated and the match ended in a 3-0 loss.

Giving his autopsy of the match, the winning Captain, Nicolaos Vingos commended his charges for their “amazing” overall performance, especially in the second half when the wheels came off but still managed to stick to the script.

“It was an amazing first half for us. We started dropping our standards a little bit in the second half. But we pulled through. We didn’t get as many circle entries like we did. But we focused on our basics more. We got things right and that’s all that matters at the end of the day,” he said.

Although this was a routine victory, Vingos expects his teammates to exert themselves more, especially with tough fixtures expected later on in the festival.

“I expect us to do a lot better than we did today. We are just getting the mojo of it. I’m definitely excited to see how we perform throughout the tournament.”
