CMS engages with little ones about safety

What started as a routine school lockdown drill recently turned into a valuable lesson in safety for the learners of Cotswold Country Montessori School in Benoni.
The presence of a Community Monitoring Service (CMS) vehicle as part of the lockdown practice prompted the school’s principal to reach out to CMS, leading to a heartwarming initiative aimed at helping children understand the role of emergency services in their daily lives.
CMS then paid a special visit to the school.
What followed was an engaging and educational demonstration that left children both informed and inspired.
The CMS team took time to speak to two separate groups of learners, explaining who they are and what they do.
The children learned how CMS responds to emergencies, protects the community, and works hand-in-hand with police and medical teams. More importantly, they were introduced to safety basics, including the national hand signal used to silently ask for help when in danger.
To make the session more interactive, CMS showcased their emergency vehicles, including an ambulance. Learners were given the opportunity to climb aboard, explore the equipment, and ask questions in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Following the visit, school staff noted a marked change in the children’s attitudes.
“We saw a shift from trepidation to fascination. The children now speak about CMS with excitement and a sense of trust,” said one of the teachers.
Encouraged by the success of the visit, CMS aims to extend this initiative to more preschools and early learning centres across Benoni and the surrounding areas.
“We want children to feel safe when they see our uniforms or vehicles, knowing that we’re here to help. By starting these conversations early, we empower the next generation to understand safety and respond to emergencies with confidence,” said a CMS representative.
Schools interested in hosting a similar demonstration are invited to contact CMS.
