Drunk driver nabbed at N12 roadblock

The campaign aimed to educate motorists and members of the public on preventable actions to avoid distractions that can lead to accidents.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport’s road safety campaign, Ethoma Ka Wena (It starts with you), went ahead as planned on May 9 along the N12 highway, just after the Etwatwa off-ramp, despite the unexpected absence of MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela.

The MEC was initially scheduled to lead the initiative; however, officials from the department, along with members of the EMPD, SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and the National Traffic Police, brought traffic to a standstill as they stopped and searched vehicles.

One driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while another person was arrested for being an illegal immigrant. A total of 67 traffic fines were issued, amounting to R24 000.

The campaign aimed to educate motorists and members of the public on preventable actions to avoid distractions that can lead to accidents, injuries, and fatalities on the roads.

It also sought to raise awareness of the dangers posed by drunk driving, speeding, driver fatigue, poor pedestrian visibility, unroadworthy vehicles, and the failure to use seatbelts.
