Youth Desk gets proactive

“Better to be prepared and not need it, than to need it and not be prepared.”

In celebration of Youth Day on June 16 and to mobilise the city’s youth, the Benoni CPF Youth Desk will champion a safety and unity awareness campaign.

The movement will host an expansive missing elderly and children campaign at key locations throughout the city on June 14 from 09:30 to 16:30.

Conceptualised and initiated by Ward 27 Clr Lornette Joseph, the Youth Desk will reach out to communities, offering families a simple yet essential tool of preparedness.

Through the campaign, they assist parents, caregivers, and those with elderly parents or partners in collecting personal identification information, such as fingerprints and physical descriptions.

This information will not be retained by the CPF, any of its members, a third party, or the police.

Instead, they will hand it back to families for safekeeping, offering them a vital resource should the unthinkable ever occur.

“It is for terrifying moments when a loved one goes missing, panic takes over, and the mind becomes your worst enemy,” said Halima Kadir, chairperson of the Benoni SAPS CPF Youth Desk.

“Having this information ready could make the difference. It gives families a sense of control, and that is something no one should be without in an emergency.”

Kadir explains the community can look forward to enjoying a vibrant family-friendly atmosphere featuring stalls brimming with snacks, drinks, hand-crafted goods and youth-driven entrepreneurship at these satellite events.

“This is an opportunity not only to be proactive about your loved ones’ safety, but to uplift the next generation of leaders and dreamers,” she said.

“The campaign will celebrate the power of community and the strength in working together, sector-by-sector and family-by-family.”
