Karateka hold their own at all-styles challenge
They won five golds, a sliver and three bronze medals.
The Lotus Karate Club karateka collected nine medals during the 15th annual Goju Ryu All-Styles Challenge at the Jonibach Hall in Pretoria on May 31.
The Parkrand-based club’s instructor, sensei Raveen Dayaram, expressed gratitude to his students for their hard work, dedication, and commitment after returning home with five golds, a silver, and three bronze medals.
“I’m extremely proud of my students. They were brave to go out there and do what they did. We are already winners for doing karate and for just competing because it takes guts, determination and a lot of courage to go out there and compete,” he said.
Precious Tshazi grabbed gold in kata and kumite, while Sibusiso Mushangwe and Zaniqua Joyce received gold in kata and bronze in kumite, respectively.
Latoya Mushangwe got a silver in kumite and Dayaram received a gold in kata and bronze in kumite.
“The medals are a bonus. It’s always nice to win medals. But even if we don’t win a medal, we win by competing and learning to better ourselves,” added Dayaram.
