Swimmers take the plunge in polar swim

40 swimmers took part in the event.

Open water swimmers braved the chilly winter weather to partake in the Benoni Open Water Swimmers (BOWS) social polar bear swim at CR Swart Dam, at the Ebotse Golf and Country Estate, on June 16.

Around 40 swimmers from Ekurhuleni and the West Rand took a plunge in 10°C water temperature, not dressed in wetsuits.

“The vibe was exciting with a lot of enthusiasm and everyone encouraging each other to get the event going,” said Tommy Gibson of BOWS.

“Various distances were achieved from just dipping in to 1500m. We have generous donation of “OBS” to take the chill off. This was accompanied with hearty breakfast at Doppio at the Ebotse Club House,” Gibson added.

Despite some “priceless looks” from the golfers, Gibson expressed gratitude to all participants and to the estate for allowing them to use the facility.

“BOWS appreciates the support we get from Ebotse Estate and for the use of the facilities. The water quality remains excellent with no reported adverse effects in the five years we’ve been swimming there.

“Thanks to the Ebotse Homeowners Association for monitoring the water quality.”

On how the club’s open water swimmers fared in their respective competitions and challenges, Gibson added, “they have had an excellent year so far with 65 members carrying out Midmar crossings, some achieving significant finishes in Triathlons and Ironman competitions.

“And the highlight was eight swimmers achieving the Robben Island to Big Bay Crossing. We have quite a few in training for the next upcoming crossings.

“We wish to thank all involved, our safety canoe support crew, product sponsors Vita 24, donations received in money and OBS.”
