One dead, two injured in Benoni CBD workplace shooting

A deadly shooting at a girlfriend’s workplace left one dead and two injured. Police arrested a 31-year-old who now faces multiple serious charges.

A 31-year-old man faces murder and attempted murder charges following a fatal shooting at his girlfriend’s workplace on the corner of Ampthill Avenue and Tom Jones Street on June 7.

According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele, the man initially arrived at the premises looking for his girlfriend. After being told by a security guard that she had already left for the day, he left but returned moments later armed with a firearm.

“He fatally shot the security guard at the entrance and then entered the store, where he opened fire again, injuring two others. He then fled the scene on foot,” Sekele said.

Paramedics declared the security guard dead at the scene, while the two wounded victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The SAPS Tracing Task Team, working with the investigating officer, followed several leads and tracked the man to Etwatwa, where they arrested him on June 9.

He faces multiple charges, including murder, two counts of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspect has appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.
