Abandoned newborn rescued from sack in Daveyton

A newborn baby boy was discovered abandoned in a sack near Gumbi Cemetery in Daveyton on June 16.

The infant, believed to be only a few days old, was taken to Far East Hospital for medical care.

Skumbuzo Dlamini, of Sizo Skumbuzo Security, said he was called to the scene by community members after a passer-by made the shocking discovery at around 17:00.

“When we arrived, the child had already been taken to a nearby house. He was wrapped in a warm blanket. We then called the

Daveyton police and social workers who transported the child to hospital for medical treatment.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Raider Ubisi confirmed that while a formal case has not yet been opened, police investigations are underway to establish the circumstances around the abandonment.
