Thank you for being a SPORT, Benoni!

Thank you Benoni for your generosity.

Nelson Mandela encouraged people to use their own lives to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

He argued that overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity but an act of justice and that it required a fundamental shift in how we treat the less fortunate.

Isaac Ndlovu from East Athletic Club (EAC) and sprinter Nqobile Banda received the starting block. Ndlovu said this will come in handy for Banda and her teammates during the sub-youth track and field season later this year and again during the youth and senior season early next year.

The former statesman believed that poverty is not natural but a creation of human systems that can be overcome through collective action.

Collectively, you were a SPORT, Benoni!

Nompumelelo Ndlovu, Dudu and Nompilo Motha from Lollipop Crechè and Day Care Centre received balls and plastic rackets for the children to play a game of tennis during their lunch break.

You are our Players of the Match because your contribution to our Be a Sport initiative has made this drive a success.

From the first day on June 9 until July 14, you overfilled the boxes at Benoni Northerns Sports Club, Old Bens and Benoni Lake Club with sporting equipment, gear and bags which will be put to good use by the less fortunate.

Because of you, needy cricketers, footballers and budding golfers have the tools of the trade they need to succeed.

Thabang Ditshego received some cricket equipment on behalf of the Etwatwa Cricket Club ladies team.

Young tennis players in the Gauteng East Tennis Association (GETA) development programme now have rackets and balls and to score their aces without worry.

You helped us with squash and badminton rackets, cycling helmets, hockey sticks and a lot more, which will be donated to needy clubs, organisations and schools in our community.

Priscilla Msiza from Ekurhuleni Golf was received the golf clubs, bags and balls. The equipment will be distributed to children in their development programme.

Thank you, Benoni, for your generosity. You have changed lives.

As Mrs Churchill from Brakpan said before donating her late husband’s clubs, “things are so bad in our country, sport is one of the few things that can give the youth hope. From Mandela Day onwards, the budding golfers in the community are going to drive to success”.
