Silence fell across the jetty outside the Ebotse Club House as the lapping waters of the CR Swart Dam taunted participants of the inaugural WannaDo Events’ Polar Bear Swim, held on July 19.
Among the 64 swimmers preparing to take the icy plunge into the 10°C water, 13-year-old Garrick Jahnel from Jatniel remained calm and focused.
He had a single goal in mind: to complete his first 1 000m open water swim and raise funds for The Animal Guardians (TAG), an animal welfare organisation based in Cloverdene.

Cheers erupted as Garrick emerged from the choppy waters—one minute and 17 seconds under his 16-minute target.
“That was a good swim and not nearly as cold as I expected it to be,” he said, briefly, while quickly changing into warm clothes.
With a bright smile, he added, “I think open water swimming will become a permanent fixture, alongside my other swimming activities. I think I’m ready to attempt the Midmar Mile.”
Sipping steaming hot chocolate, the teen excitedly shared hugs with family, friends and supporters, letting out the occasional celebratory “whoop.”
“Through the support of the community, I was able to raise R23 000 for TAG. Lots of people also donated food and other items to the organisation,” he said.

“I’m incredibly proud that so many people opened their hearts and wallets to help a cause so close to mine. I’m also glad I managed to complete the swim just as I intended to.”
TAG founder Annie Jungmann praised Garrick’s determination and dedication.
“I would not set foot in such cold water, yet Garrick did it with a smile on his face,” she said. “We are extremely proud of him and grateful. Well done, Garrick, you are our honorary ‘fishy.’”
