Young blood takes charge of van Ryn
Rotary International is currently celebrating its 120th year of existence.
The atmosphere at the Carisbrooke Bistro was electric as Rotarians and Anns gathered to usher in an exciting new year, as Derick Watson was inducted as president of the Rotary Club of Benoni van Ryn.
Taking the podium, on July 19, the club’s 53rd outgoing president Bob Andrews, reflected on a year that was both rewarding and revealing.
“When we began this journey, we set ambitious goals, aiming to stretch ourselves and our club’s impact,” he said to a room packed with esteemed Rotarians.
“While we did not land exactly where we aimed, I can proudly say that we achieved 87% of our goals. I choose to not focus on the shortcomings, but rather the spirit and sincerity of our efforts.”
He continued by saying that during the past year the club raised meaningful funds, sponsored impactful projects and most importantly, served with heart.
“What truly matters is the compassion we brought to our work and the lives we touched. That, to me, is success.”
Proudly donning the club’s presidential chain, Derick, who is currently one of the club’s youngest members, thanked its longstanding members as well as past presidents for entrusting him with the privilege to lead the club.
“Rotary is an organisation that consists of committed members who exemplify dedication,” he said, looking to those who led before him.
“We are hands on, we roll up our sleeves and revel in getting our hands dirty; all in an effort to be of service to our community.”
“I am humbled by the great responsibility that you have entrusted me with. I will endeavour to build on the club’s foundations for future growth with enthusiasm and innovation.”
District Governor Elect, Grace van Zyl commended the club’s unwavering resilience in an ever changing world.
“I am excited to see what you will accomplish during the coming year,” she said.
“The club has a new spark and have set its course with clear direction. Currently being the oldest Rotary Club in Benoni, following the heart-breaking closure of the Rotary Club of Benoni, you have the benefit of being at the helm of a club that is filled with vigour and energy.
“I implore you to lean on the knowledge, guidance and leadership of committed past presidents who still lend their full support to the club.
“Draw on their sage advice but also navigate your own course of direction, remain true to the organisation’s pillars of service and use this opportunity to grow through membership and reach.”
With their glassed charged members and guests raised a glass to toast the club’s youthful president as well as an organisation which has changed the lives of many.
