Easterns groundsman honoured for CSA awards nomination

He's been a groundskeeper for almost 17 years.

After nearly two decades of unwavering commitment, Eastern Cricket Union groundsman Alfred Mcatshiswa has earned national recognition with a nomination for Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Groundsman of the Year award.

Mcatshiswa, who has spent close to 17 years maintaining the pitches and outfields at Willowmoore Park, said the nomination came as a surprise, especially since the award typically includes high-profile venues that host international test matches.

“It’s an honour. I never expected it,” said the Daveyton resident. “We compete with venues like DP World Wanderers and SuperSport Park. But I’m happy.”

While the recognition has filled him with pride, Mcatshiswa dedicated the nomination to his late colleague Mncedisi Radebe, who passed away last year.

“I wish Mncedisi were here to see the work he started continue. I hope we haven’t let him down. We always told ourselves we would put Willowmoore Park on the map,” he said.

“We experienced many heartbreaking moments, like match cancellations, but we remained committed. As groundskeepers, we know the importance of doing things with precision to ensure the field is always immaculate.”

He’s been nominated for the groundsman of the year award at the CSA Awards.

Known for his meticulous attention to detail and deep care for the condition of his pitches, Mcatshiswa’s passion for cricket drew him into groundskeeping. While he knew he didn’t have the talent to score sixes or take wickets, he was determined to contribute to the sport in another way.

“I love the sport so much. When I first joined the grounds team, I knew instantly it was what I wanted to do,” he said.

He credits Brendon Frost, a former colleague and mentor, for playing a vital role in his development.

“He taught me the job. We attended training and courses. Through dedication and commitment, I managed to gather all the experience needed to excel.”

When asked how it would feel to win the award, Mcatshiswa was humble:

“I’m just here to ensure the work is done properly and the fields are ready for matches.”
