Stewart and Robb victorious at marathon

This was in preparation for upcoming canoe marathon interprovincials and the worlds.

Michael Stewart and Michael-John Robb claimed victory in the main event of the Centurion Canoe Club 9 Miler at the Rietvlei Dam on July 26.

Stewart and Robb clocked 01:22:13 for victory in the 18km in the K2 race.

Benjamin Mntonintshi and Kyle Armdorf finished second in 01:22:14.14, with the University of Pretoria’s Sam Butcher third in 01:22:14.76.

The East Rand Kayak’s (ERK) Richard Tandy was the second grandmaster at the finish in the K1 race. He crossed the line in 01:35 (one hour 35 minutes), while Johan Grabie and Salmarie Pretorius were third in the sub-masters’ mixed doubles race.

In the short course event, Gareth Barberton and Phillip van Tonder won the men’s race in 47:50.08, with Hardus Theunissen, George Marx and Dirk Klassen second in 48:00.86. Angus McLean and Joseph Sejaphala completed the podium in 49:50.02.

Siphesihle Radebe and Soyama Lilane won the women’s race in 50:59.36. Emily Langley was second in 57:49.98, with Khanyisile Mdakane and Buhle Khuza third in 01:06:16.33.

The event formed part of Gauteng paddlers’ preparation for the upcoming interprovincial races, as well as the International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Marathon Championships in Hungary next month and the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Champs in Durban in October.

“A number of our paddlers are building up their fitness to participate in upcoming interprovincial races. This marathon will assist us in selecting a strong team for these events.

“It will also be of assistance to Canoeing South Africa to select its team for the major international events from this month to October,” said Gauteng Canoe Union spokesperson Jennie Dallas.
