WATCH: ‘Arriba’ for Apricot Tree!

‘Amor,’ to all the women of Benoni.

Donning brightly coloured sombreros and wrapped in flowing ponchos, 200 women cha-cha-d into Benoni High’s school hall in celebration of Apricot Tree’s 13th annual Women’s Day fundraiser on August 9.

With tables set with qué padre (cool) Mexican themed centre pieces, the aroma of freshly made enchilada and tacos served as a gentle reminder that those in attendance were in for a spicy afternoon of fun and entertainment.

Making her rounds in an ankle length skirt, the principal of the Northmead-based specialised education centre, Abby-Jade Reason welcomed the ladies, gushing over their themed outfits.

“We are incredibly grateful for the community’s outpouring of support,” said Abby.

“We asked and the ladies showed up with unbridled support. I am blown away!”

Quietly making her entrance, South African songstress Amor Vittone let out a giggle, swooning not only over the décor but noting the palpable energy filling the hall.

“I love performing in Benoni, the audience are spontaneous and ‘lekker,” she said, a mischievous smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

“We are going to let our hair down, shake our hips and embrace the beauty of womanhood.”

The artist and mother continued by saying that women are often consumed by their roles as nurturers and inadvertently hinging their identity on loved ones’ well-being.

“Events like these have dual benefits. We will be raising much needed funds for an organisation that plays a vital role in the lives of differently abled children while creating a platform for women to just be,” she said.

“My aim is to reignite every woman’s spirit, enabling them to celebrate every aspect that makes them unique.”

As one of the few men in the hall, Apricot Tree founder, Errol Treacher made a quick escape before the fiesta kicked into action.

“I can see that the ladies are in for loads of fun and I hope they realise what a profound role they play in our homes and community,” he said.

“Thank you for your ongoing support, it is invaluable to us as well as the children in our care.”
