New manager at Fairleads Retirement Village
Cheree Van Heerden, who lives in Alberton, described her move to Fairleads as the beginning of a new chapter.
Cheree van Heerden stepped into the role of manager of Fairleads Retirement Village on July 1, bringing with her over 25 years of experience.
She previously worked in the cleaning industry as an operations manager and, most recently, spent two years at Methodist Homes in Springs, where she discovered her passion for elder care.
Cheree, who lives in Alberton, described her move to Fairleads as the beginning of a new chapter.
“I decided I needed a change. I told myself, if God wants me here, I will be here.”
She is determined to tackle two of the biggest issues facing the elderly: loneliness and boredom.

“We are fighting to make their lives worth living. When families don’t visit, it’s sad for them. Even a 10-minute visit from their children brings joy,” she explained.
Staff regularly attend training sessions that focus on the importance of empathy and sympathy to better understand and support residents, particularly those battling illnesses like dementia, she added.
She also ensures that the facility remains clean and well-maintained and that every activity is tailored to suit the residents’ personalities.
Cheree urges families to stay connected with their elderly loved ones.
“Visit them to show them love. If your parent has dementia, educate yourself and try to understand. It makes all the difference.”
When she’s not at work, Cheree enjoys dancing, going to the gym and socialising.
