Local producer looking to take his sound to the world
He started producing music almost 20 years ago.
Daveyton-born hip-hop producer David ‘Freedom De DJ’ Mokoena is on a mission to take his sound to the world – and he’s not just chasing fame; he’s chasing respect.
Armed with gritty beats, sharp production skills and a deep love for the genre, Freedom De DJ wants his name to ring out not just in local circles but across the global airwaves as a producer who knows his craft.
“I want to be known beyond the borders of Benoni as a producer who is passionate about his work.
“Music has many consequences. Today you are hot and tomorrow cold. I would like to expand my footprint as far afield as the USA.”
Recently appointed the executive producer of Rynfield Production Company, MGX Entertainment, the artist said this has given him opportunities beyond his wildest dreams.
“When I started almost 20 years ago, I didn’t take it seriously. But I decided to give it a shot, and the results have been amazing. I have worked with artists I never thought I would produce for. I’ve met producers with similar ambitions. I’m in a happy space.”

Among some big names, Freedom De DJ has worked with American rapper and record producer Dizzy Wright.
He said such opportunities have only whetted his appetite to associate himself with successful American artists.
“I want more. As a producer, I have to acquaint myself with other successful producers so that I can grow,” said the 34-year-old.
MXG Entertainment owner Kino Isaac met Freedom in 2021 while scouting for local artists to work with.
After crossing paths with the Daveyton resident, he knew from the onset that he had found what he was looking for.
“I gave him the first project with Rick Ross, and he did a phenomenal job. He knows what he’s doing. He’s got the skills. Unfortunately, he hasn’t received the exposure he needs.
“When I look at Freedom, I recall stories of Dr Dre coming out of Compton. In South Africa, it’s like coming out of Daveyton and working with all these big names.
“I see Freedom going to the States, learning from the producers there and then utilising that education to uplift artists here. He means the world to me,” said Kino.
