Riley defends South African pony rider title in thrilling style

After two previous faultless rounds, Riley entered the jump-off with determination and precision, stopping the clock in 54.94 seconds to secure the win.

Jaimie Riley, aboard the Sunny Park Warhorse, delivered a blisteringly fast clear in the jump-off to successfully defend her South African pony rider title at the South African Youth Showjumping Championships in Midrand, held from July 28 to August 6.

After two previous faultless rounds, Riley entered the jump-off with determination and precision, stopping the clock at 54.94 seconds to secure the win.

It was not just Warhorse who shone. Riley also piloted Sunny Park Stables’ Scooby Doo to a flawless triple clear, clinching third place in 56.33 seconds.

“The competition was fierce, with many seasoned and highly competitive riders in the field. Out of the starting competitors, 11 riders entered the jump-off on a perfect zero score, making speed the deciding factor.

“In this format, riders go in reverse order of qualification, giving the top contenders the advantage of knowing exactly how fast they need to go. Riley, riding Scooby Doo, was among the earlier jump-off competitors. Her 56.33-second clear put her in the lead, but she knew the title would be decided on Warhorse.

“Saving her best for last, she rode an electrifying round, shaving over a second off her earlier time. The tension peaked when the final rider, the top qualifier, entered the ring. Their round was fast and flawless, but a time of 55.41 seconds fell just short of Riley’s winning pace,” said her mom and coach, Nicola Sime-Riley.

With her title secured by a margin of less than half a second, Riley proved once again why she is one of South Africa’s brightest young equestrian talents.
