Fire destroys school workshop

A fire swept through a workshop at St Dunstan’s College, destroying three rooms but leaving no injuries.

A fire swept through the operations workshop and storage building at St Dunstan’s College on August 18, destroying three rooms.

There were no injuries reported.

According to the school’s operations manager, Bennie Ihlenfeldt, the fire started at around 12:10. He and his team, working in different areas of the school at the time, were alerted to smoke rising from the workshop building.

“By the time we got there, the fire had already engulfed the facility. Emergency services were called and managed to contain the flames before the fire spread further,” Ihlenfeldt said.

He explained that the building, which housed the school’s tools and equipment used for maintenance, as well as a staff kitchen and lockers, was constructed with a wooden upper structure and a brick base.

“The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. I am awaiting someone from the fire department to assess and investigate the cause. An inspector is expected to come today,” Ihlenfeldt added.
