Harriers youngsters show good form at provincials

The club had a good representation at the event, with Kiana Pepler the top performer.

Kiana Pepler and Emma Hickley led the Benoni Harriers charge at the CGA cross-country championships at Germiston Soccer Club on August 16.

Pepler delivered a golden performance in the junior women’s 6km race, covering three laps of the course in 22:25 to bag the provincial crown.

Hickley pulled off an incredible performance in the U16 girls’ 4km, falling a place outside the top three after finishing the two-lap race in fourth behind Boxer’s Taya Pelser, Sunè-Louise Prinsloo of Helpmekaar Kollege and Hoërskool Randburg’s Megan Kleynhans.

Despite suffering from shin splints, Mary-Jane Nel battled through the discomfort to finish fifth in the U16 girls’ 4km, with Kaitlyn Mackay crossing the line ninth in the same race.

While there improved performances from Ockert Winter and Divan Klein, who have shown tremendous talent all season and will likely challenge for top honours in the future, Gareth Jonas ran a disciplined race to finish eighth in the U14 boys’ 4km.

Winter and Klein finished inside the top 20 in the U16 and U17 boys’ 6km in a field of 47 runners.
