NWS trio earns first black belts
The trio earned their maiden black belts following a week-long 14-hour grading.
The New World Shotokan (NWS) Karate Rynfield dojo’s Zoe Doro, Gustav du Plessis and Madeleine Engelmohr graded to first dan (shodan) on August 16.
The trio earned their maiden black belts following a week-long, 14-hour grading at the NWS annual Vasbyt/Perseverance Gashuku.
Doro started karate alongside her husband and twin daughters, Refiloe and Bokang, and it has since become part of her family life. Du Plessis got into the sport because he was bullied at school, while Engelmohr has always wanted to become a karateka.
“I’m proud of the journey all three have travelled and the karateka they have become. Passing their first black belts is really just the start of their journey,” said eighth dan John Barnett.
