Tambo Memorial Hospital restores sight and hope
Armed with scopes, skill, and compassion, healthcare workers at Tambo Memorial Hospital performed 27 life-changing procedures, including 16 cataract surgeries to reduce surgical backlogs and bring clarity back to patients' lives.
Tambo Memorial Hospital recently took part in the Gauteng Department of Health’s third Mandela Day Surgical Marathon by successfully performing 16 life-changing cataract surgeries.
Led by MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, this initiative forms part of the province’s ongoing campaign to reduce the backlog of elective surgeries across public hospitals.
In addition to cataract procedures, the hospital addressed a variety of other urgent surgical needs, including colostomy reversals, hernia repairs, thyroidectomies, elective caesarean sections, and orthopaedic surgeries such as retrograde nailing.
Altogether, Tambo Memorial completed 27 surgeries during the event.
Among the beneficiaries was Bertha Louw, who underwent cataract surgery on her left eye performed by ophthalmologist Dr Agness Kenyeres.
Louw shared her heartfelt gratitude, describing how her vision had been clouded with grey patches that made it difficult to see clearly. She reported immediate and remarkable improvement after the operation.
“I can see clearly again,” she said, urging others experiencing vision problems to seek timely screening and referrals to prevent avoidable blindness.
Joel Ndlovu also expressed his amazement at the results.
“I was shocked at how well I could see right after the surgery. I didn’t expect such immediate improvement.”
