Wattville community unites to celebrate Heritage Day

The festivities featured performances by two cultural groups and local artists, who entertained the crowd with poetry, music, and dance.

Showcasing culture and tradition, community members from Wattville and surrounding areas gathered at Mabuya Park on September 20 to celebrate Heritage Day.

The event, organised by the Good Hope Centre of Concern in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, brought together residents of all ages, who embraced the occasion dressed in colourful cultural attire.

The festivities featured performances by two cultural groups and local artists, who entertained the crowd with poetry, music, and dance that reflected the richness of South Africa’s traditions.

Dressed in their beautiful cultural attire are some of the youngsters who attended the Heritage Day event at Mabuya Park on September 20. They are Lesedi Majewu, Ritah Putsweni, Thandolwethu Ngidi, Nokukhanya Ngidi and Thandolwethu Mofokeng.

Director of the Good Hope Centre of Concern, Poppy Mohlala, said the annual celebration has grown significantly since it was first hosted six years ago.

“This year marks the sixth year of celebrating Heritage Day and honouring our heroes and heroines. Every year we identify local heroes and remember the contributions they made in the past.

“As Good Hope, we align ourselves with creating the spirit of Ubuntu, we are here because of Ubuntu,” Mohlala said.

She added that the support of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has been crucial in ensuring the success of the event.
