Cameras bring good Samaritan to book

Investigations are continuing.

SNIPR’s license plate recognition (LPR) database across the city, and its collaborative partnership with local security companies, again helped bring an opportunistic criminal to book.

On September 25, it was reported that a man driving a blue Toyota Tazz had robbed a stranded motorist of her cellphone.

According to information from AAA Security, the victim’s vehicle had broken down on the corner of Fourteenth Ave and Sixth Street, Northmead.

The “good Samaritan” came to her rescue, but instead fled with her phone.

The LPR system was triggered in the early hours of September 26, and AAA Security personnel apprehended the criminal, still in possession of the stolen phone.

The Benoni SAPS is investigating the incident and possible links to a similar case reported in the Country View Estate.
