Rotary comes to the Manger’s rescue
“Great things can be achieved if we unite for a common cause.”
Responding to an urgent plea from the Manager Care Centre (MCC) in Brentwood Park, four Rotary Clubs across the East Rand jumped into action, donating R20 000 worth of food staples to the organisation.
With a bakkie filled to the brim with maize meal, rice, pasta and canned goods, Rotarians descended on the facility on October 8 to deliver their bounty.
MCC fundraiser Chadwin Solomons explained that the NPO’s pantry ran out of food staples on October 6, prompting the organisation to release an appeal for assistance.
“On average, we support between 150 and 180 beneficiaries, not only offering them a haven and skill development opportunities, but also providing them with three balanced meals daily,” he said.
“Due to the harsh winter and ongoing cold snaps, our capacity has increased to 222 individuals in need of care and support.
“Our hearts sank when the last of our supplies were hauled to the kitchen, and out of desperation, we relied on the support of our community.”
Revealing its contribution, Derick Watson, president of the Rotary Club of Benoni van Ryn, said the donation stems from four East Rand-based clubs, committed to supporting the plight of those less fortunate.
“Upon seeing MCC’s post, I immediately got into contact with the Rotary Anns of Benoni Van Ryn, Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora, Rotary Club Springs Gold and Rotary Club Germiston, to drum up support for this cause,” said Derick.
“What happened was beyond phenomenal; not only did the clubs pledge financial assistance without hesitation, they contributed to a spur-of-the-moment initiative, making this the biggest collaborative Rotary project in a very long time.”
In an effort to support local business and with a shopping list in hand, Derick set out to Kit Kat Cash and Carry Benoni to purchase the required goods.
“I was in awe when the outlet contributed additional items to supplement the donation,” he said.
“Not only were we able to make a substantial impact, but the wider community’s support, as well as that of a local business, showed what can be achieved if we all stand together in the service of others.”
Chadwin thanked the Rotarians for their swift response, saying the donation goes beyond filling a pantry.
“You are assisting us in restoring the dignity of others by showing them that they are part of a community that cares,” he said.
Although MCC’s shelves have been somewhat replenished, uncertainty about food security looms.
Items needed include:
• Maize meal, rice and pasta
• Tinned foods
• Sandwich spreads
• Sugar and spices
• Cooking oil and butter
• Cereal
• Preserved meat
• Hygiene and cleaning products
Donations can be delivered to MCC at 8 Kirshner Road, Brentwood Park, Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00.
