Police nab five for impersonating police officers in Daveyton

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

Five men were arrested in Daveyton on October 14 after they were found in possession of SAPS uniforms and allegedly impersonating police officers.

EMPD Daveyton Precinct officers apprehended the suspects around 13:00 following an alleged attempted hijacking incident along the N12 highway.

According to EMPD spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, a 36-year-old motorist reported that he was driving along the highway when he offered a lift to an unknown female pedestrian.

Some of the items, including cellphones, a screwdriver, and a Taser, were found in the suspects’ vehicle on October 14 in Daveyton.

As the woman got out of his vehicle, a white VW Golf allegedly blocked his vehicle at the front. A man wearing a police reflective jacket and jeans climbed out of the vehicle, prompting the motorist to suspect foul play.

Dlamini said the victim immediately became suspicious and drove away.

“The VW Golf chased him and tried to block him again, but he managed to escape. While performing their duties, EMPD officers noticed the Golf driving erratically in front of another vehicle and stopped it to find out why. The driver of the other vehicle, the victim, then approached the officers and explained what had transpired,” said Dlamini.

He added that officers searched the VW Golf and found SAPS uniforms, a CPF reflective jacket, cellphones, a screwdriver, a Taser, two arm belts (commonly known as fighting belts), and a firearm license that did not belong to any of the suspects.

After questioning, it was confirmed that none of the men were police officers. They were arrested and detained at the Daveyton SAPS.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
