Northerns juniors shine at league meeting
The athletes were part of hundreds of junior runners from across the province competing for a spot in the CGA team for the ASA sub-youth track and field champs in Potchefstroom next month.
Tyla Fourie and Tumishang Seroka showcased the strength of the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club’s (BNAC) junior programme with impressive performances in the sprint and middle-distance events during the third CGA sub-youth track and field league meeting at Germiston Stadium on November 1.
Fourie once again showed her versatility with impressive showings in the U13 girls’ 800m and 200m hurdles, respectively, while Seroka shone in the U13 girls’ 1 500m.

Fourie clocked 02:26.19 to finish second behind Lara Nel of Helpmekaar College, who crossed the line in 02:25.57. The 13-year-old also won her 200m heat in 31.59 but placed third overall on the combined results.
In one of the races of the day, Seroka held off Ilse Louw to win the 1 500m in 04:55.81, leading the race from the second lap to the finish. Her teammate, Mila Rossouw, was seventh in the same race.

Sprinter Denè Geldenhuys finished fourth in the U13 girls’ 100m dash before winning the javelin throw after tossing 26.34. Nolwazi Magwaza clocked 1:56.30 to win the U9 girls’ 600m, while Quinn Schonken was 13th.

Shayla Lloyd was a class act in the U11 girls’ multi-event, which comprised the 1 200m, long jump and javelin. She ended the day at the top of the standings on 267 points.

Boys
Sprinter Aaron Ani was eighth and seventh overall in the U9 boys’ 60m and 80m.
Luhlelo Mahungela clocked 10.91 for fifth place in the U11 boys’ 80m. He was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 4.64m.


Bokamoso Nonyane was third in the U11 boys’ 1 200m after finishing the race in 03:46.13, while Baxter Towers finished the U9 boys’ 600m race 13th in 02:08.13.
The fourth league meeting is on November 8 at Germiston Stadium.
