Crime in Brief

Crime prevention and water safety operations will intensify in the lead-up to the festive season.

From November 17 to 21, the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and the SAPS Water Police and Diving Services (WPDS) made these arrests and recoveries:

Possession of drugs
A man was arrested on November 20 in Emaphupheni. He was found with 15 packets of heroin.

Vehicle recovery
• BFS officers arrested four people on Princes Avenue on November 21.
The men were found travelling in a Toyota Rumion that had been reported as hijacked in Brakpan.

• On the same day, an abandoned Renault Triber was recovered in Thembisa.
The vehicle was also reported as hijacked.

Police Emergency Services
From November 14 to 20, the Police Emergency Services (PES), including the flying squad, K9 units and Highway Patrol, arrested 74 people across Gauteng.

The operation resulted in:
• 42 arrests for serious crimes, including assault common with the intend to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen property, house burglary, theft, malicious damage to property, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of unlicensed ammunition, attempted murder, contravention of the Immigration Act, armed robbery, kidnapping, driving under the influence of alcohol, intimidation, rape, robbery, reckless and negligent driving, contravention of a protection order, use of vehicle without owner’s permission, possession of housebreaking equipment and fraud;

• the recovery of 32 hijacked and stolen vehicles. Three arrests were made for being in possession of these vehicles;

• an arrest for being in possession of unlicensed firearms. One weapons were seized.

• 28 suspects being arrested for possession of drugs with the intent to sell. Drugs recovered included heroin, dagga, meth, cocaine and Mandrax.

WPDS
Gauteng WPDS members recovered three bodies.

Tshwane: Officers and members of the K9 Search and Rescue Unit recovered the body of an unidentified man in the Hennops River, Attridgeville, on November 17.

Ratanda: On November 18, WPDS members from Ekurhuleni recovered the body of a man in the Blesbokspruit. It is alleged that the victim sent a message to his family expressing his intentions to commit suicide.
Arriving at the spruit, officers found a broken rope secured to a nearby branch, shoes and a hat.
It was suspected that the victim had attempted to hang himself but the rope snapped, leading to his body falling into the water.
Following an intensive two-day search, his body was found downstream from where the incident occurred.

Vanderbijl Park: Sedibeng WPDS officers responded to a call from Iscor, where the body of an unidentified man was found in a canal. It is alleged that the victim was electrocuted.
