Fireworks (again) cause massive distress to animals

Local animal welfare organisations are packed to capacity with lost, abandoned and neglected animals.

While community members gathered in festive cheer, unrelenting bangs from fireworks sent many animals scrambling to find safety, resulting in animal welfare organisations having to jump to their rescue.

Under Section 42 of the CoE’s Police Service by-laws, headed Disturbance of the Peace, no person is permitted to discharge fireworks without prior written consent from the council.

On December 28, CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini issued a statement saying that DEMS was taking a firm stance on the sale and use of fireworks during New Year celebrations.

He warned that businesses found unlawfully selling fireworks could be issued spot fines of up to R2 500, while those found illegally discharging fireworks could face fines of R1 000.

The Animal Guardians (TAG)

According to Annie Jungmann, the founder of TAG in Cloverdene, the warning did little to deter the use of fireworks throughout the festive period.

“Fireworks erupted throughout Cloverdene, Crystal Park, Rynfield and Chief Albert Luthuli from before Christmas,” she said.

“New Year’s eve was, however, the worst. Our team spent the evening at the kennels ensuring that rescue animals in our care are safe, and patrolled the streets rescuing frightened animals that had fled from the safety of their homes to escape the onslaught of noise.”

Seven dogs were taken to the TAG, four of which were claimed and reunited with their families.

“We dedicate a lot of time to educating the community about the impact of fireworks, not only on domesticated animals but also on bird life,” Jungmann said.

“Despite our efforts, these warnings fall on deaf ears. Decisive action is needed to affect a blanket ban on fireworks.”

Benoni SPCA

A staggering number of animals came into the care of the Benoni SPCA in December, placing tremendous strain on the society’s overburdened resources.

According to chairperson Monique Quènet, seven dogs were rescued after their owners allegedly abandoned them to go on holiday.

“Many animals were surrendered to us, with financial pressures as well as relocation being among the top reasons for relinquishing ownership,” she said.

“Of all the animals that came into our care, only three were owner claimed.”

SPCA manager Thomas Mohlake said that, compared to previous years, December 31 celebrations resulted in only two animals being rescued.

However, before the chime of midnight, inspectors, field officers and kennel hands responded to a call in Brown Street, Mayfield, of a Brahman heifer that had fallen into a stormwater drain.

“It is alleged that the cow had fallen into the system on December 26, but the community only reported the matter to us on December 31,” said Mohlake.

“Despite our efforts and based on the animal’s injuries, the decision was made to humanely euthanise it to prevent further distress and suffering.

“Information regarding the animal was circulated on social media platforms dedicated to small-scale farmers in the area, but to date the owner of the animal could not be located.”

How you can help

Local animal welfare organisations remain committed to the care of the city’s animals; their ongoing success, however, hinges on the ongoing support of the community.
