Third place at Springs Striders Race delights Kingsway’s Sefali

In his first 32km race, he finished third in 01:52:22.

After storming to the podium on his 32km debut at the Springs Striders Road Race on January 18, Kabelo Sefali wasted no time seeking out his training partner, Mpumelelo Mokoena, embracing the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club ace to celebrate his victory.

That finish line moment captured more than just a result; it reflected a bond forged through sacrifices, belief and shared kilometres on the streets of Daveyton.

Such is the depth of their connection that Mokoena, also tackling the distance for the first time, returned the embrace and offered words of encouragement after the Waterfall AC athlete clocked an impressive 01:52:22 to secure third place, proving that on this day, brotherhood mattered as much as medals.

“Mpumelelo and I had planned to work together for 22km. I knew he is stronger than me. So, after 22km I told him to go and not worry about me. We paced each other well and I’m happy our plan worked,” Sefali said.

The 23-year old from Kingsway shared his excitement after his third place, which was crafted with hard work and “focusing on my own race”.

“I’m happy with my performance. It was my first time in the 32km. Although the race was difficult, it was exciting. The podium is a bonus.”

Though Sefali’s step up from his usual 10km and 21.1km brought a few challenges, he handled them with maturity, and the race provided a clear glimpse of where his career is headed.

“One good thing about running in Springs is that the course is fast and flat. But for me, I had challenges here and there because it was my first time running a 32km race. I’m used to the half-marathon and 10km. I wanted to challenge myself today. I see I have the potential to push. I will try my best going forward,” said Sefali.

The athlete has been running for over two years but could not commit fully to the sport due to his studies at the Mpumalanga University. He only started taking it seriously when he linked up with Mokoena’s group last year.

“I’m grateful to my training partners. They pushed me to be where I am today. I’m proud of my performance.”

Looking ahead, Sefali will participate in the CGA track and field season from January 31 and also in cross-country mid-year.
