Passion for animals leads young graduate to SPCA

A passion for animals has shaped the career path of 26-year-old Emmanuel Leutle, who is steadily making his mark at the Benoni SPCA as a newly qualified field officer.

Leutle joined the SPCA in September 2024 as a trainee field officer. After completing his training, he officially qualified for the role and now works on the frontline of animal welfare.

His daily duties are varied and often demanding.

They include attending to animal cruelty and neglect complaints, rescuing animals in distress, educating the public, creating awareness about animal welfare, and conducting outreach programmes and door-to-door initiatives in communities.

“I’ve learnt so much since I started working at the SPCA. It’s been more than I expected, and my passion for helping animals has grown even stronger,” said Leutle, who holds an Advanced Diploma in Animal Science.

His journey, however, was not easy. After matric, he initially wanted to study agricultural economics but was unable to secure a placement.

He then chose to pursue Animal Science at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), a decision that would ultimately define his career.

After completing his three-year diploma, Leutle had the opportunity to work on a farm in KwaZulu-Natal but was later retrenched.

Emmanuel Leutle (26) brings dedication and heart to his role as an SPCA field officer.

He also worked at Bronkhorstspruit and Free State, where he decided to further his studies by enrolling for a one-year advanced diploma. During that time, he balanced working and studying to achieve his qualification.

While living in Pretoria, he had previously applied for positions at the SPCA but was unsuccessful. That changed when a post for a trainee field officer opened up.

“When I saw the position, I applied again, and this time I got the opportunity. I’m really grateful,” he said.

Leutle said his family are supportive of his career choice. He also expressed appreciation to the community that welcomed him with warm hands and the Benoni SPCA for their support.

“I’m thankful to the SPCA and the community for trusting me. Animals can’t speak for themselves, so we have to speak for them. In the coming years, I hope to qualify as an inspector so I can do even more to protect animals,” he said.

Outside of work, Leutle enjoys staying active. He keeps fit by jogging and regularly takes part in cross-country marathons.
