Queue marshal fatally shot in suspected taxi violence incident

The victim, believed to be a resident of Wattville, was on duty at the Barcelona Office Taxi Rank.

A queue marshal was fatally shot in Etwatwa in a suspected taxi violence incident this morning (February 5).

The victim, believed to be in his 50s and a Wattville resident, was on duty at the Barcelona Office Taxi Rank.

According to Etwatwa SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Barbra Ndaba, the man was allegedly standing in the street where he helps manage taxi operations when a gunman approached and opened fire.

“The suspect wore a long black jacket and no disguise. He allegedly shot the victim in the upper body before fleeing on foot. No one else was injured,” said Ndaba.

Ndaba said thepolice have opened a case of murder.

The killing follows another deadly shooting in Etwatwa just two days earlier, on February 3.

In that incident, two taxi drivers affiliated with the Benoni Taxi Association (BTA) were shot and killed in daylight on the corner of Koppie Motebang and Eiselen streets, near the Caltex garage. A third man, believed to be one of the gunmen, also died in the shoot-out. A teenage boy was injured during the crossfire and rushed to a hospital.

Violence at taxi ranks in the area is not new. Last March, a queue marshal working at the Las Vegas Taxi Rank was shot and killed in daylight while sitting in the shade at the rank. An unknown gunman reportedly approached and fired several shots before fleeing.

The police have not yet confirmed whether the incidents are linked, but investigations are ongoing.

Anyone with information on the shootings or the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to contact the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111 or report to their nearest police station.
