High speed chase leads to discovery of unlicensed firearms

Investigations are continuing.

A 49-year-old foreign national was arrested at the N12 Etwatwa off-ramp on February 27 following a high speed chase.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa, members of the EMPD K9, Intervention and Drug Enforcement units were participating in an inter-provincial road block on the highway when a silver Volkswagen Jetta failed to comply with officers’ instructions and sped through the designated area.

“While speeding through the roadblock, the suspect’s vehicle struck a couple of on-duty officers. A high-speed chase ensued,” said Thepa.

“The vehicle was tactically brought to a stop where a body and vehicle search led to the discovery of an undisclosed amount of money, two unlicensed firearms and 10 live rounds of ammunition.”

The suspect was detained at the Springs Police Station and faces several charges, including possession of suspected stolen property, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of unlicensed ammunition and attempted murder.
